Troubleshooting Tips from the Help Desk
Troubleshooting Techniques
- Reboot
- If you are having trouble connecting to the CCHS network, try
- Make sure your wireless card is enabled (LED should be lit next to toggle switch
- Make sure that your Symantic Antivirus is up-to-date and then scan your C: drive for viruses.
If your laptop is running slowly, try these tips:
- How many programs are you running at once? RAM (Random Access Memory) is one component that runs your computer. If you have several programs running simultaneously, it will slow your machine down.
- You may have programs loading as soon as your Windows OS starts. Check to see what icons pop up on your taskbar. If you have a lot of icons in your taskbar, you may want to have someone help you uninstall programs that you do not use. Sometimes when you download programs from the internet, spyware and other such programs may be loaded onto your machine without your knowledge.
- Run Scandisk and defragmenter. Scandisk is a program that goes through the computer's memory and corrects bad data. Defragmenter also goes through the computer's memory but it retrieves lost space and forms it into usable space again. Both of these programs can be reached through Start>> Programs>> Accessories>> System Tools. When you run these programs, please make sure that your computer is plugged in and plan for these programs to run for a while. (Hint: don't try and do this during morning recess or during class changes!)
- Make sure that your Symantec Anti-virus software is loaded and up-to-date. Run a virus scan to see if your laptop is infected with a virus. See Mr. Menard immediately if you find that that your laptop is infected.
